 Over the development years of a pedigreed cat, various natural and planned genetic combinations have provided the evolution of the breeds we recognize today.  Some are naturally occurring breeds and others are man-made.

 Breeders often choose to work with a single breed and devote their love and attention to the development of that breed. Their aim is to preserve, protect, maintain and improve their chosen breed.   All of our breeds of domesticated cats would indeed become extinct were it not for the continuing interest of breeder/fanciers and the public.

 The Cat Fanciers’ Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1906. The first cat shows licensed by CFA were held during 1906 – one in Buffalo and one in Detroit. The first Annual Meeting was held in 1907 at Madison Square Garden.

 Over the years, CFA has registered over a million pedigreed cats. The association has over 600 member clubs and annually licenses approximately 400 cat shows world-wide.

 Today, CFA is planning a move of its central office from Manasquan, NJ to Alliance, OH, where it will begin operations in Spring of 2011.

On the route, the cat passes an historic dockyard and naval base, a city centre, several suburbs and the city’s red light district.  

He has been making the journey for so long that all First Bus drivers have now been told to look out for him to ensure he gets off at the right stop.

Susan Finden, 65, a care worker who is Casper’s owner, said: “Casper has always disappeared for hours at a time but I never understood where he was going. I called him Casper because he had a habit of vanishing like a ghost. But then some of the drivers told me he had been catching the bus.”

“I couldn’t believe it at first, but it explains a lot. He loves people and we have a bus stop right outside our house so that must be how he got started – just following everyone on. I used to catch the odd bus too so maybe he saw me and got curious what I was doing.” 

“Casper is quite quick for his age so he just hops on to the bus before the doors close. He catches the 10.55am service and likes to sit on the back seat.”
Rob Stonehouse, one of the drivers on the route, said: “He usually just curls up at the back of the bus. Sometimes he nips between people’s legs but he never causes any trouble.”

Casper has travelled an estimated 20,000 miles but Mrs Finden says because he is getting old the drivers often have to shuffle him off at the right stop. A spokeswoman for First Bus said the firm has put a notice up in the office asking them to look after the non-paying passenger.

Although they aren’t quite as well-known as dog shows, cat shows have a significant and devoted following.  Organizations like CFA and TICA put on hundreds of different kinds of cat shows each year. Modern cat shows started in London in 1871.  In the U.S., CFA began in 1906 and has been organizing cat shows ever since. The CFA-Iams Cat Championship, which was held each year in Madison Square Garden, is the cat version of the Westminster dog show with 325 cats competing. The CFA International Cat Show holds competitions among 850 cats in a different city every year.  In 2009 it is in Atlanta.

Forty-one distinct CFA breeds from lean and lanky, curly coated Cornish Rex to heavy, extravagantly groomed Persians will all delight the eye.  A supermarket of cat supplies, toys, treats, the best cat food on the market, and give-a-ways will satisfy your cat’s needs. Sharp competition and hundreds of ailurophiles (cat lovers!) joining this annual spectacular event will fulfill your desire for excitement.
